Jay Bay, as it is locally known, is considered to be one of the five most famous surfing destinations in the world. The Jeffrey’s Bay Surf Break is a very long, fast, tubing right hand point break that breaks along the west side of the bay. The break is regarded as one of the best right hand point breaks in the entire world, in both consistency and quality. They also host the annual Billabong Pro ASP World Tour surfing event every year, which can be viewed live over the internet and various television channels if you can’t make it to the beach. So if surfing’s your thing, then Jay Bay is where it’s at.

This collection of narrative poems incorporates much of the epic tradition while bringing something original to historical narration. Through the eyes of the Indians both noble and lowly, real and imaginary, in a series of first person poems, the events in the one hundred years immediately before Francisco Pizarro’s arrival in Peru in 1532 until 1571 are recounted. Totemic spirits—puma, condor, llama and serpent—speak, each representative pairs of the male-female polarities of the Incan empire, which was divided into four quarters, or suyos. Each of the Incan rulers relates events of the pre-conquest period through the execution of the last Incan ruler, Tupac Amaru. The metrical and stanzaic pattern of these dramatic monologues replicate the highly ordered Incan society. Only a poetic history can imaginatively chronicle the epic struggle of the clash of two cultures. As in all poetry, the facts of history are the springboard for imaginative flights. Fact becomes fiction and fiction becomes fact, bent which way suits best the imagination.

No other ruin evokes so powerfully the grandeur and mystery of a forgotten civilization as Machu Picchu. Since its existence was first publicized in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, this World Heritage site has become the embodiment of a “lost city”—although nearly half a million people find their way there every year. Until now, no survey of the site, history of its archaeological exploration, and assessment of the city’s meaning have been brought together in one authoritative and portable volume.
In the centenary of this enigmatic site’s “rediscovery,” David Drew offers an up-to-date guide to the ruins, in all their complexity. His vivid account includes the story of Hiram Bingham’s expeditions and a judicious appraisal of their achievements and failings. He examines the latest theories on the purpose and functioning of the city and the circumstances of its abandonment, and he explores the powerful symbolic significance the site has acquired since its discovery for different groups of people. Drew also looks dispassionately at how the fabric of the city has fared over the last century and the dangers to the region’s environment that its immense popularity now presents. A final chapter covers the controversy over the future of items removed by Bingham from Machu Picchu, which currently reside in Yale University’s Peabody Museum.
Much more than a guidebook, Machu Picchu enables readers to appreciate the magic and multiple meanings of perhaps the most romantic ruin in the world.
