Edward Stern is a guest blogger for My Dog Ate My Blog and a writer on Accredited Online Colleges for Guide to Online Schools.

The last film from writer/director duo Peter Brosens and Jessica Hope Woodworth, Altiplano is an absolutely breath-taking visual experience with a tragic and all-too-real story at its core. Set high in an Andean Village in Peru, the plot follows the arcs of Grace, a war photographer devastated from her time in Iraq, and Saturina, a local woman fighting against the mines that have poisoned her people. Their lives intersect in heart-breaking and powerful ways.

Altiplano 21 428x285 Movie Review: Altiplano (2009)

The story is essentially one representing an epic, age-old clash: that between the traditional and the modern. Villages begin to die after a mercury spill from a local mine. The people work tirelessly in the mines for little pay and no hope of leaving the small village for greener pastures or a brighter future. The injustices are many and all abhorrent. They result in a violent riot, filmed with unflinching intensity, that gives birth to another injustice: the death of Grace’s husband Max, an aide worker at a nearby eye clinic.

Amidst all the tragedy, violence, and exploitation, are amazing cinematography. This is a movie that needs to be seen in theaters or on a really big screen to fully appreciate the shots of the region’s natural beauty. Imposing, snow-capped mountains surround some of the driest areas on the planet, as the Altiplano region most extensive high plateau area on Earth outside of Tibet. Beautiful Lake Titicaca serves as an immense oasis in this strange sea of brown surrounded by mountains ranges on all sides.

Altiplano 12 428x285 Movie Review: Altiplano (2009)

The scenery is the real star of the movie. The plot tackles some important issues, and the actors handle the adverse plights of their characters capably, but nothing on screen stands out as much as the Altiplano region itself. The ever present mountains watch the squabbling and self-destruction of the mortals below with unflinching disdain. Mined for their riches, riches that cause turmoil, exploitation, and pain, they are violated as well, but do not have the capability to fight back.

Altiplano is a much about the desecration of the region as it is about the duress of the miners and local communities affected by the mining company’s atrocious policies. The amazing scenery will make viewers want to visit the region — and help bring about change there, for the betterment of the wildlife and the people who call it home.

Rain forest coffee certification is a new concept, but not as new,it sums up all the extensionists advises plus strengthening the producer communities in their awareness of their farming activities’ impacts on the environment. It creates an avenue to reach out to the masses that live in the rural areas away from the polluted cities(folks in the rural areas are not aware of climate change per se but they suffer unknowingly e.g.extreme weather conditions, drought and famine)
As an extension worker the biggest challenge is to relate climate change to what the farmers are already experiensing in their every day life.Once they make the connection, they act and the criteria in SAN standard ensure conformity that help to mitigate and adapt farming to environmental, climate friendly practises, unlike other standards.

I admit to not having been a fan of “The Hills” – if I want to listen to stilted conversations between people I don’t know, I can just take the Tri-Rail. (Also, Spencer Pratt makes me twitchy). But I always though cast member Audrina Patridge was pretty, and I enjoyed her on ‘Dancing With The Stars” last season. Actually, I thought she should have been in the top three and was robbed by the tsunami of votes for another unlikely finalist who I will not name because, honestly, I don’t want the emails.

Anyway, I heard that Audrina was going to be in Palm Beach for the weekend. She rubbed shoulders with the pretty people at the International Polo Club in Wellington and took a private polo lesson from equally pretty polo player Nic Roldan. And on Saturday night, she partied at the island’s 251 The Club. It’s a gorgeous space, and Audrina fit right in. She hung out on a banquette with Nic, antique dealer Cedric DuPont, and public relations maven Shamin Abas (who, in full disclosure, I must tell you is a friend).

I didn’t get to meet Audrina,  but I walked by her a couple of times enough to say that she’s even prettier in person. She’s also thinner than she appears on TV, but I imagine that’s the thing with the cameras adding a few pounds. She also seemed pretty nice, making conversation, smiling and looking like she was enjoying herself. I can’t imagine what it’s like trying to do that with everybody looking at you. Then again, she’s a celebrity, so I guess that’s in the job description.

Movie Listing: Showtimes, reviews, more

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Rango” has lassoed the top spot at the box office.

The animated Paramount film featuring Johnny Depp as the voice of a Wild West chameleon sheriff rode into town with a million debut, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

“Rango,” which was directed by “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise maestro Gore Verbinski, is the first animated feature from Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects studio founded by George Lucas in 1975.

“The draw for audiences was certainly Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski, but when you look at the reviews, it was 88 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a level that Pixar operates at,” said Don Harris, Paramount’s executive vice president for distribution. “This is a film that has a shot at being nominated for Academy Awards this time next year.”

Universal’s mind-bending thriller “The Adjustment Bureau,” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, debuted in the No. 2 spot with million. CBS Films’ fantasy tale “Beastly” with Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens opened at No. 3 with .1 million, rounding out the weekend’s top three films. It was another down weekend for Hollywood, with grosses coming in less than the corresponding weekend last year.

“Comparisons to a year ago are tough considering that’s when ‘Alice in Wonderland’ opened with 6.1 million,” said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian, referring to the Tim Burton film. “We’re not even in that realm this year, so this is our second down weekend in a row. We’ve only had one up weekend at the box office versus a year ago. There’s this malaise overtaking the marketplace.”

The raunchy Warner Bros. comedy “Hall Pass” stayed committed in its second weekend in the No. 4 position with million. The 3-D animated Walt Disney romance “Gnomeo and Juliet” also kept that loving feeling going in its fourth weekend with .9 million in the No. 5 spot, despite an animated showdown against “Rango,” which was not released in 3-D.

“The King’s Speech,” the royal chronicle from the Weinstein Co. that ruled last week’s Academy Awards with 12 wins, maintained the No. 7 place this weekend with .5 million. Dergarabedian noted that audiences who wanted to see the Oscar front-runner starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush likely rushed to see the film before the Academy Awards telecast.

The weekend’s other wide release, Relativity Media’s throwback comedy “Take Me Home Tonight” starring Topher Grace and Anna Faris, only took home .5 million in the No. 11 spot. The box-office war will heat up with another barrage of movies opening next weekend, which includes the sci-fi saga “Battle: Los Angeles” and the PG-13 fairytale “Red Riding Hood.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. “Rango,” million.

2. “The Adjustment Bureau,” .9 million.

3. “Beastly,” .1 million

4. “Hall Pass,” million.

5. “Gnomeo and Juliet,” .9 million.

6. “Unknown,” .6 million.

7. “The King’s Speech,” .5 million.

8. “Just Go With It,” .5 million.

9. “I Am Number Four,” .7 million.

10. “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” .3 million.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With ideal weather as a backdrop, crowds poured onto the streets Sunday in the traditional warm-up for Carnival’s big show on Fat Tuesday when New Orleans expresses itself in song, dance and masked spectacle.

Sunday featured celebrity-laden parades — including CNN’s Anderson Cooper, actress Kelly Ripa, the rock band Train and actor Andy Garcia — and the typical drunken revelry of the French Quarter where tourists, locals and swarms of spring breakers rubbed shoulders.

Sunday was packed with the festivity that was missed on Saturday. Heavy downpours that canceled parades and forced the superkrewe of Endymion, a crowd favorite, to be pushed back a day. The line of thunderstorms that crossed the state spawned a tornado that killed a woman shielding her toddler son in Rayne, La.

In New Orleans, the warm-up was in full swing and people celebrated under beautiful clear skies.

On Bourbon Street, Pete and Helen Drago, Carnival old-timers dressed in beads and formal clothes, walked slowly through the still-brewing madness, arm-in-arm and on the lookout for some place to dance their specialty, the jitterbug. After 55 years of marriage, and even more years of Carnival under their belts, they were ready for another round of fun.

“That’s what we do: We dance everywhere there’s good music,” Helen, 76, said. “Mardi Gras is dressing up, coming out, meeting people and having a good time.”

“We’re just messing around today,” Pete, a former dancer with Louis Prima, a New Orleans music jazz singer and trumpeter who helped make Bourbon Street a party mecca in the 1950s. “Tomorrow we’ll be dressed up!”

The tempo ratchets up even more on Monday — known as Lundi Gras — as the Carnival festivity moves closer to its climax on Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday. The excesses of Carnival end at midnight Tuesday with the beginning of Lent.

Going the other way down Bourbon toward the strip clubs and mayhem of bead throwing, a group of spring breakers from Illinois State University had daiquiris in hand.

They’d arrived near dawn, seven crammed in a Chevy Traverse after 14 hours on the road getting 20 miles to the gallon. They parked and started drinking.

“We just got here. We haven’t even checked into the hotel yet,” said Ethan Galvan, a 22-year-old mass communications major.

On Jackson Square, a group of girlfriends from the University of South Carolina were much more tame — and still in search of wildness.

“It’s crazy, but it’s not as crazy as I thought it would be,” said Katherine Davis, a 21-year-old marketing and management major.

The costumes were beginning to come out.

Don May and Tim Simer were dressed like drag queens in hoop dresses, big colorful wigs, jewelry galore and tights.

“We just came back from church,” May, a 56-year-old landlord from Memphis, Tenn., joked as gangs of revelers on Toulouse Street asked to get their picture taken next to him. “It’s hard to fit these dresses in a pew.”

Down the street in front of Johnny White’s bar, a posse of bikers from St. Bernard Parish smoked cigars and drank cans of beer. They said they’d been coming to the bar for Carnival since they were 10 years old.

“I come out the uterus doing it,” said 54-year-old Wayne “Spudley” Debouchel.

But they were a bit peeved. After years of parking their motorcycles without hassle in front of Johnny White’s, a favorite watering hole for bikers, they’d just gotten tickets.

“ party fee,” said Robert “Frenchie” Francois.

Far from the drunken revelry of the French Quarter, crowds packed the oak-tree lined St. Charles Avenue, jostling for the beads, stuffed animals, flying discs and trinkets that masked riders on elaborate floats throw to the adoring crowds.

It gets so crowded on St. Charles, and real estate on the parade route is so prized, families rope off sections along the route 24 hours or more before the parades roll, often getting up in the middle of the night to stake out their plots.

The camps include barbecue pits, mini kitchens, portable toilets, lawn chairs, stacks of coolers and rows of ladders for children to stand on to get up above the heads of parade watchers.

Sunday featured two of the biggest favorites: the Krewe of Bacchus and the Krewe of Endymion.

The grand marshals for the Endymion parade included Anderson Cooper, Kelly Ripa and Train. Andy Garcia reigned as Bacchus.

Catch a ride on the Peruvian railroad during your Cusco and Machu Picchu vacation. Although many visitors see the sites and the city as part of a tour—which is recommended—with a bit of legwork, it is possible to travel solo. Many local buses and combis (small van-type buses) run from Cusco and among the villages of the Sacred Valley, but the easiest and safest way to travel is by train.

The first thing to do is decide what type of ticket you want to buy. There are three classes: Expedition is the budget option, Vistadome is first class, and Hiram Bingham is luxury.  They are priced accordingly. If traveling during the high season, tickets should be purchased ahead of time. This can be done online at the Peru Rail website.

The train that goes to Machu Picchu leaves from the Poroy train station, which is located about 20 minutes outside of Cusco. You will need to take a bus or a taxi to get to the station. Each class of ticket departs at a different time, and there are usually only are departure time for each class, so it is very important to be on time.

After you are on the bus, you will stay on until the very last top. This stop is in the town Aguas Calientes, also called Machu Picchu Pueblo. The train does not go all the way to the ruin site Machu Picchu. When you get off the bus, you might need to buy an entrance ticket for Machu Picchu if you have not already done so. You can also buy entrance tickets in Cusco, but not at the entrance of the ruins.

From Aguas Calientes you can buy a bus ticket for a 20-minute ride to the site’s entrance, or you can walk on a path that follows the road. The path, and road, is steep, so if you’re walking, expect to spend about over an hour getting to the entrance.

Located roughly halfway between Cusco and Lima, Ayacucho is one of Peru’s most attractive Andean cities and has valleys teeming with archaeological importance. The colonial buildings and churches fill the town’s skyline with the Andes as a picturesque backdrop. The surrounding hills are covered with cacti, broom bushes, and agave plants. At 2800m, the climate manages to be pleasant all year round with dry and temperate blue skies nearly every day.

Despite its excellent weather, archaeological splendors, and beautiful colonial presence, the town does not have a large traveler presence. The central Andes are one of Peru’s least visited areas, but travelers that step off the beaten path learn that this is a special region. Today, most visitors to Ayacucho arrive from Lima or Cusco either on a thirty-minute flight, or overland by bus. The first road that linked the Peruvian coast to Ayacucho was not finished until 1924 and in 1960 there were only two buses and a few dozen vehicles in the city. After a road was paved to Lima in 1999, Ayacucho entered the 21st century but the past remains an important part of the town’s daily life.

You’ll find that few people in the town speak any English, as Quechua is the city’s first language, although most of the town’s inhabitants can also speak some Spanish. Around 700 AD, Ayacucho was the center of the Huari culture which spread its powerful religious symbolism throughout most of Peru for the next 300 or 400 years. After the fall of the Huari, the ancient city became an important Inca administrative center. Ayacucho’s strategic location meant that the city grew very wealthy as miners and administrators settled here. The city’s churches were built from the wealth of this time and demonstrate the high level of Masonic and woodworking skills of the local people. The Battle of Ayacucho, took place near here on the Pampa de Quinoa in 1924, and freed Peru from the shackles of Spain. Ayacucho was the last place to be released from colonial power. Today, Ayacucho is a radical university town with a long standing left-wing tradition.

Don’t miss…

1)      Plaza de Armas: The lovely churches and mansions are mostly packed tightly together in the blocks around the main plaza. The monument to Mariscal José Sucre stands in the middle. Just off of the plaza is the cathedral, built of red and grey stone between 1612 and 1671.

2)      Complejo Turistico San Cristobal: This courtyard complex is full of excellent cafés and shops. Try the food and nightlife, which are both excellent in the area. Try the distinctive cuisine, or listen to live music at one of Ayacucho’s penas.

3)      Iglesia de Santo Domingo: Founded in 1548, this beautiful church has one of the most striking facades in the city. Admire the three arches of brick and lime, the Baroque and Churrigueresque gold-leaf altar, and images of El Senor del Santo Sepulcro and the Virgen Dolorosa.

4)      Casona Jauregui: This exquisite 17th-century mansion was built by Don Cayetano Ruiz de Ochon. The grand house has a fabulous patio and balcony with two lion statutes and a stone shield of Indian influence displaying a two-headed eagle.

5)      The craft workshops: Located just uphill from the Plaza de Armas in the barrio of Santa Ana, these craft workshops welcome visitors. You can buy more interesting and less expensive crafts from the actual artisans here than in the shops in town. Alabaster carvings, known in Peru as Huamanga stone carvings, are a specialty of Ayacucho artisans. If you don’t have time to venture up hill, check out the artesian markets around the Plazoleta Maria Pardo de Bellido.
